Resolved Question: What does the word "Hispanic" mean?

I am from a country where we don't have that word. Yes, I understand it refers to people of Latin American origin. But it is rather confusing and doesn't make any sense to me: 1- It does not apply to Spaniards, as they are European. 2- It is obviously not a race or an ethnicity, as Hispanics can be multiracial or of any race. The term includes people as different as Cameron Diaz, Senator Bob Menendez, Sammy Sosa, Jennifer Lopez or Alberto Fujimori. 3- It cannot include all Latin America, as Brazilians were colonized by the Portuguese and do not even speak Spanish (although Brazil is considered as part of Latin America). 4-It cannot be restricted only to Latin America either, as many US born Hispanics (such as the Hispanic people who are original from New Mexico or Arizona) don't necessarily have Latin American origin.
